Welcome
to the web site of the JOBS project, an innovative development
project implemented for the
by the
at the
.
The objective of the JOBS Project is to support the growth of
the private sector by helping to improve the performance of
small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and the policy
environment in which they operate. JOBSs specific goal is to
enable these enterprises to achieve greater economic growth,
thereby expanding employment opportunities, reducing poverty,
and improving the standard of living for poor Bangladeshis. To address this
objective, JOBS operates in several distinct
sectors, including footwear,
handmade paper, home textiles, leather goods, light electrical
equipment, personal protective equipment, and information
technology.
Improving the performance of the SMME sector requires an
enabling environment that encourages competitiveness, eases
access to financial and non-financial services, allows for
expanding markets for products and services, and promotes the
use of technology and information. Since 1997, JOBSs efforts
in the policy arena have achieved impressive results.
Perhaps the most important of these have been our success in
nurturing the Information and Technology Act now nearing
enactment
and in facilitating access to credit for our SMME clients.
This web site offers a history of our activities and
highlights our approach, our areas of support, and the
fruits of our efforts. JOBS owes its success to a
variety of individuals and organizations too numerous to list
here, but prominent among them are its staff and partners, the
USAID Mission, many donors, the Ministries of Industry,
Science and Information & Communication Technology, and
Commerce of the Government of Bangladesh, and, of course, the
Bangladeshi enterprises that are our primary clients. |
